Last night, for midweek service, we looked at "FORMED" as the root, and then considered meaning of the word when various prefixes were added.
FORMED... shaped, made.
God formed man from the dust of the earth.
(IN)FORMED... to give shape or form to the mind to the understanding.
(IN)FORMED... to give shape or form to the mind to the understanding.
This is my job. I am preaching and teaching people so that they might be transformed into new creations and conformed to the image of Jesus.
(I SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED "DEFORMED," which means misshapen, disfigured, having lost the natural form, as in the fall and nature of man, when Adam sinned against God.)
(RE)FORMED... re-shaped, re-made, as a human endeavor.
A person can re-form himself. An addict can give up alcohol, tobacco, gambling, but being reformed does not change a person's relationship with God or change his/her nature.
We also considered the erroneous excuses, based on Biblical misinterpretation, people use to justify drinking alcoholic drinks (Jesus turned water into wine and Paul's directive to Timothy concerning drinking water and wine.)
(CON)FORMED... Formed with, formed like, formed the same as another.
1. We are not to be conformed to this world (like this world), this age.
2. We are to be conformed to the image of Jesus. This takes place through the miraculous work of being TRANSFORMED by God.
(TRANS)FORMED... Carried across from one form to another by Divine intervention.
We are to be transformed from worldly oriented people to God oriented people.
We are transformed by the renewing of our minds.
Genesis 2:7
(7) And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Romans 12:1-2
(1) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
(2) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 8:29
(29) For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
God knows all things, including our future choices. God has predetermined that those who trust Christ will be conformed to the image of Jesus. If we refuse to be conformed to the image of Jesus, by not trusting Him and obeying Him and walking in the Spirit, we will not be saved, We have a choice concerning if we will be included in God's salvation, we do not have a choice about what God's salvation will include.
